The Nursery

The nursery started out as a source for rare and unusual plants that I couldn’t find in the trade and has burgeoned to include a wide range of both curiosities and garden stalwarts. Beyond the cabin is a small field with our peony collection and prototype demonstration borders in various styles.

Our range is constantly expanding to include many varieties of Japanese Maples, Itoh Peonies, Lace-cap and specie Hydrangeas and rare and unusual herbaceous perennials for both sun and shade. Although, at present, we do not publish a catalogue you can find more information on the ranges we stock below, plus we frequently publish our favourite plants on Instagram.

The Garden and nursery can be visited throughought March through to end of October. You can visit our contact page for further information on how to get in touch, and our full list of opening hours.

Our Plants

Examples of many of the plants we offer for sale can be seen in the garden, making choices either easier or more difficult depending if you find yourself overwhelmed by too many! Our range is changing all the time, and if not in stock, we may offer to source a plant for you.

Trees

We stock a comprehensive range of trees, especially Cherries, Birches, Amelanchier, Maples and Crab Apples. More details on the species of trees that we stock can be found below.

  • Unusual exotic fruit include Figs, Mulberry, Quince, Persimmon, Apricots and Blueberries.

  • A fun collection of Pine trees, including many dwarfed forms suitable Japanese style gardens and bonsai.

  • And plenty of Japanese maples in keeping with the oriental flavour.

  • Numerous evergreens, especially for those seeking substitutes for boxwood. Pittosporum, Drimys, and Daphnes for winter scent.

Shrubs & Climbing Plants

In Spring Magnolias are accompanied by a smattering of rhododendrons and camellias in many forms followed the oft-overlooked Deutzias; our selection includes the lesser known but lovely D.pulchra, and D campanulatus. Aronia Hugin is always a pleasant surprise with its sprays of tiny white flowers and is a great foil for the Peony collection. Double file Viburnums, Diervilla, Physocarpus are followed by fine later summer flowering shrubs such as Chinese dogwoods, Hoheria, Styrax and Eucryphia and rarities include Calycanthus Aphrodite which is always a star attraction, along with shrubby members of the mallow family such Sphaeralcea Newleaze Coral and Anisodontea El Rayo.

  • For late summer an extensive range of Hydrangeas especially oak-leafed, Hydrangea aspera and much underrated lace cap forms of Hydrangea serrata.

  • For those after a more tropical look we have plenty of bamboo, Tetrapanax, Melianthus, Gingers, Bananas and a cocktail of other leafy plants, such as large leafed hardy Begonias.

  • We specialise in the new race called Itoh Peonies - or intersectional; a term I don’t like) The ‘Itohs’ are hybrids between tree and herbaceous peonies, combining the excellent shape and foliage of one with the flower power of the other. Mid to late May is the best time to come and see them flowering in the garden. Alongside the peonies are lesser known perennials such as Amsonia and Baptisias, that help bridge the flowering gap between peonies and the start of the rose season.

  • We stock a small range of roses, selected for their proven garden worthiness, scent and how well they associate with clematis in particular. To accompany the roses we have plenty of as Agapanthus, Astrantia, Perowskia, Nepeta, Lavander, Geraniums and Geums.

  • For the genteel English feel we have selection Roses along with plenty of Lavender, and scrambling through them are Clematis, especially small and late flowering varieties, Along with plenty of Akebias, Honeysuckles, Jasmines and Wisterias.tion

  • Again hopefully you will find the garden a source of much inspiration. It is also a great source for propagation
